Case Study: Expert doing speaking engagements

Self-publishing is not 'just' of interest to people who are already authors or writers. It can actually be quite lucrative for people with a specific expertise, who are either doing speaking engagements, or who would just like to help others with their knowledge.

A friend of ours, for example, did speaking engagements in her spare time for parents and teachers on troubled teenagers. This was her passion and she did these free seminars after work and on weekends as time allowed. One evening over dinner I queried if she was ever asked about further reading.

“Of course”, she replied. “I have a list of books I hand out after every seminar.”

I smiled and suggested she write “the book” and sell it to her audiences.

Two years later we met again. Beaming she came over and explained that she had indeed written her book. Sales had gone so well that she was able to give up her day job and lecture full time. Even though she still did not charge for her talks, she was now making more money than before and was loving life.
