The
Brotherhood is a broad scope thriller, which manages to weave together
fast-moving vivid action into a time canvas that spreads from the Second World
War to the present moment (or just beyond...).
The subtitle, Acquisition of Power, refers to a will and a vision that grew in
certain powerful men of business, Nazi ideologues, to place people and acquire
businesses over a period of decades, in order to exercise control and
influence.
This is the second novel by Alex Blackwell, and continues the reader's
relationship with key characters. Anyone who has read his first book - The
Butterfly Effect - will know the quality of tender poignancy that he brings to
the love between people, and how they deal with the vicissitudes of life. Such
a reader will also look forward to being at sea; one cannot doubt that Alex
Blackwell is an experienced sailor, indeed he is a captain, and the
authenticity of his experience enriches the reader.
It is an exciting read, an interesting read, a heart-warming read...... And it
ends too soon.
Don't miss it!

I
wanted a summer read that would be fast, easy to read and with a sense of place
whilst on holiday. I was not disappointed. Johan Beyer full of bitterness after
his war time experiences vows to topple the USA as world power through the
formation of the brotherhood. He is partnered for a while in this ambition by
his son Wolfgang. They part company on methods however. Wolfgang assembles his
team. by sea and by land evoking a wonderful sense of place as Argentina, the
Caribbean and New York are vividly described.
Unbeknownst to the plotters, young Peter Blessingham a computer expert and
student living in Dublin had hacked into the NASA computer system and the first
faint clues of the plot are revealed. Peter is tracked by the American security
forces represented by an old family friend Jack O' D anand agrees to
co-operate.
The chase is on as a team is assembled by Wolfgang Bayer to topple the USA and
another team is assigned to prevent it. The description and use of technology
is impressive and the sense of timing finely tuned throughout. Take this book
to a quiet spot and read in one sitting.
5.0 out of 5 stars If you like Tom Clancy, you'll

If you
like your background facts detailed and precise, your plots fast and furious
and your prose clipped and exciting, then you'll love Alex Blackwell's second
novel in the 'Butterfly Effect' series. Based on the premise that events from
the past have a profound effect on the future, 'The Brotherhood' follows a
driven and embittered survivor of the German battleship 'Bismarck' in his quest
to build a business empire and establish a Teutonic dynasty. Alex Blackwell
uses his detailed knowledge of the sea, his experience of sailing the Atlantic
and his love of Ireland to add depth to the story, which climbs in pace to a
plot to hijack the missiles of a US nuclear attack submarine equal to anything
in a James Bond movie.
Readers may have a challenge in the early part of the book as the story jumps
between the past and the present but, as the momentum of the plot takes hold,
they'll find it worth the effort. An incredible blend of ultra-detailed fact
and creative fiction.
