About Daria Blackwell

Daria BlackwellDaria spent many years cruising along the East coast of the United States from Maine to Florida in a variety of boats. In 2008, Daria and her husband, Alex, sailed across the Atlantic in Aleria, their Bowman 57 ketch, from Halifax to Westport, Ireland where they now live.

In 2009-2010, Daria and Alex took a sabbatical trip in which they completed a spiral around the Atlantic Ocean visiting many countries including Spain, Portugal, The Madeiras, Canaries, West Indies, and the Azores before returning home to Clew Bay. They had the opportunity to observe and learn best practices for marine and shore based destinations catering to individuals, couples, groups, and families. This experience has fuelled their passion to help develop and promote Ireland’s coast, a place of remarkable natural beauty on a global scale, into a world-class marine leisure destination.  They are passionate about getting people out on the water.  Both Daria and Alex are members of the Failte Ireland Clew Bay Steering Group.  They have spent the past few years sailing the west coasts of Ireland and Scotland.

Daria holds a USCG Captain’s license and is a member of the Ocean Cruising Club (OCC), Mayo Sailing Club, American Yacht Club, and Seven Seas Cruising Association, for which she and Alex serve as the port captains to welcome visiting yachtsmen to Ireland. Daria was appointed to the OCC Strategic Planning Team in 2010 and was elected to the OCC Committee in 2011. She now serves as the OCC Press Officer and Chairman of the Digital Communications SubCommittee and Port Officer for the west of Ireland.

Daria is also a professional copywriter and frequent contributor to print and online publications on both sides of the Atlantic. Daria’s articles have been published in Classic Boat, Cruising World, Practical Boat Owner, Latitudes & Attitudes, Seafaring International, Cruising Outpost,  Offshore, Windcheck, Spinsheet, Points East, Sail World,  Soundings and Flying Fish.  An article on the Galway stopover of the VOR appeared in Scuttlebutt in 2009 and another was published after the 2012 VOR Finale in Galway. Her feature article on encounters between whales and ships appeared in Yachting World January 2015.

Daria developed much of the content for the website www.coastalboating.net and is co-author of the leading amazon.com book on boat anchoring (Happy Hooking - The Art of Anchoring).  Her blogs on sailing the west coasts of Ireland and Scotland proved popular and were picked up by magazines in the US and UK (http://aleriasadventures.blogspot.ie).   Daria and Alex are skilled motivational speakers and presenters. They have delivered seminars at boat shows and sailing clubs, and are frequent presenters of global online webinars for the Seven Seas University and Great Lakes Cruising Club.

Daria Blackwell’s career in the United States included leadership positions in major marketing, advertising and communications firms. Her strengths lie in market analysis, strategic planning, positioning, and creating integrated tactical plans.  In her most recent US position, she was Managing Director of the 400-person New York office of S&H, A WPP Company, in New York City and all their digital operations.
